Maldon ladies’ victory
[24 Jun 2008 | No Comment | ]

Maldon Ladies’ emphatic victory over Old Chelmsfordians at the Prom on Friday was their third consecutive win in the Beaumont Seymour league this season.

The sky was overcast and there was rain in the air by the time OCs arrived at the Prom, having erroneously thought the match was to be played at Drapers Farm. Eventually the captains tossed up and OCs having won, decided to bat. Following last week’s exciting encounter OCs were hopeful of turning the tables on Maldon and the Maldon Ladies were expecting to have to fight hard for victory. In the event there was no contest! Only OCs captain (bowled for 12 by Hadfield) and the number 3 (lbw Penketh for 20) managed to make any real contribution to the score. Hadfield bowled well for her three wickets. Penketh was economical, bowling three overs for six runs and getting two wickets into the bargain. But pick of the bowlers was Patel who bowled her four overs for just three runs, getting three wickets in the process. At one stage she was on a hattrick but the hat-trick ball was just kept out by the OC batsman. The other wicket takers were Cullerton and Harris. Excellent catches from G. Penketh and Hadfield, together with a very tidy wicket keeping performance from Webdale, including both a catch and a stumping added to the misery of the OC batsmen who found the Prom wicket far too slow for their liking. Committed fielding from the whole team restricted the Old Chelmsfordians to 66 all out in the 19th over.

The Maldon reply was positive. For the loss of only one wicket Maldon amassed the required total in only 13 overs. Captain Penketh led the assault with an excellent 26 (retired) ably supported by Hadfield 24 not out. The rest of the runs were supplied by G. Pemketh and Digweed together with “extras” No one else was required. Thus Maldon won by 9 wickets, their best result to date.

Technology cash for St Peter’s High School
[18 Jun 2008 | Comments Off | ]

St Peter’s High School has received a substantial cash grant to boost its technology lessons.

It is hoped the upgraded equipment that can now be provided will help the Burnham school’s bid for specialist status in technology.

Gary Walker, deputy headteacher at the Southminster Road school, said staff were pleased to hear an application for £51,748 from Magnox South’s socio-economic plan was successful.

Despite going up against 200 other applicants, St Peter’s was one of only four organisations to receive funding and was awarded the lion’s share of the £127,248 handed out.

The money will be used to buy computer aided manufacturing equipment which will give pupils access to industry-standard technology - and it wont just be St Peter’s pupils who benefit.

Mr Walker said: “We are the only school in the county that got funding and were supported by Bradwell Power Station in our application. The new equipment will make a big difference to teaching and it will improve the speed and quality at which pupils can produce things.

“We will also be working with primary schools so they can do more technology within their classrooms.

“They could make 2D designs using computers which they can then send electronically for us to make.”

Mr Walker said the equipment could be particularly beneficial to the Dengie Peninsula as many of the area’s marine-based companies use the same techniques.

He said: “There is a community element - hopefully it will enable us to forge links with businesses which use this sort of technology.

“Some firms may want to use it, and working closely with businesses could allow pupils hoping to go into similar fields of work getting more of an insight into what it involves.”

Mr Walker added the funding could help the bid for specialist status in technology - due to be submitted in October after the first application failed last month.

He said: “This will put us on the next step up in terms of technology lessons and the support we can give primary schools so we’ll be in a much stronger position.”

A WORLD famous, record breaking yacht is to sail into Bradwell.

The Gipsy Moth IV, in which Sir Francis Chichester single-handedly navigated the globe in 1967, will be moored at Bradwell Marina.

U-turn on Apprentice Job
[13 Jun 2008 | Comments Off | ]

A COUNCIL seems to have backtracked on its promise to offer a job to TV’s Apprentice runner-up.

Essex County Council leader Lord Hanningfield said earlier this week he wanted to give a top job to a finalist in the reality show.

But now the council admits it won’t be contacting Claire Young, 28, who was pipped to a job with Apprentice boss Sir Alan Sugar in Wednesday’s final.

Spokesman Eleri Roberts said yesterday: “We won’t be getting in touch with Claire ourselves… but would be delighted to hear from her if she were to get in touch.”

It was not clear whether any job would be available.

Claire lost out to 30-year-old Lee McQueen in the final boardroom scene. He was picked to head up a new digital display advertising project for Sir Alan.

Lord Hanningfield had said the authority was looking to create a position for the competition’s runner-up at County Hall because it wanted the “best and brightest” people on their payroll.
