Burnham Week 2008
[26 Jun 2008 | No Comment | ]

23rd - 30th August

Burnham Week 2008 will soon be upon us. For more information on this event visit the official Burnham Week website at http://www.burnhamweek.org.uk.

With absolutely nothing to do with this year’s Burnham week, I’ve inserted this video as it’s the only sailing reference to Burnham that I could find on YouTube.

Back and determined to make more money and get more people involved than last year, depending on your viewpoint, Burnham welcomes it’s 3rd Annual Pub Crawl!

This year’s Summer theme is going to be MOVIE STARS & CHARACTERS.

In tradition the crawl will start at 4pm in The Railway Inn on Saturday July 12th, Station Rd, Burnham-on-Crouch, Essex.

So far, in the previous two Burnham-on-Crouch crawls,  over £850 has been raised for The Samaritans Organisation. The past two events have had about 100 different participants and it is intended to keep this up every year, so if you haven’t made your debut yet now is the time to do so!!!

EAORA Jane’s Cup at Burnham on Crouch
[24 Jun 2008 | No Comment | ]

5 boats came to the Branklet Buoy start at Burnham on Crouch for the Association’s annual visit to the Medway.

Saturday’s race, for the Jane’s Cup, started in a solid northerly breeze of 15kts. All three classes started cleanly for the spinnaker reach out of the Crouch. Spinnaker’s soon gave way to headsails as boats came closer to the wind on leaving the river before setting again for the predominantly downwind race.

The wind continued to blow throughout the race, unfortunately accompanied by rain at frequent intervals. Only on the final leg, up the Medway to the finish, did the wind drop as a result of shelter from the docks.

Overall, S, J & R Galloway’s Elan 40 Titian won class 2 and overall. In class 3, Bob Fawkes’ Carter 37 Tigo IV and Tony & Chuffy Merewether’s Sunfast 32 Amazon enjoyed an engaging tussle, with Tigo IV just taking 2nd overall and class 3 with Amazon placing 3rd overall. Stan Fenton’s J122 Jedi Knight won class 1 and came 5th overall.

Wind Farm planning permission quashed
[24 Jun 2008 | No Comment | ]

PLANNING permission for a wind turbine in the Dengie Peninsula has been officially quashed.

The High Court had already issued a “consent order” deeming two conditions of the planning permission as “enforceable” but now Mr Justice Ouseley has rubber stamped the decision to block Npower Renewables’ proposals.

Permission for the development - which proposed ten turbines be built at Hockley Farm, Bradwell - was given in September last year after the Planning Inspectorate held a high profile inquiry.

But protest group Battle (Bradwell and Tillingham Tackling Lost Environment) launched a High Court appeal and, in January, it was announced that the inspector’s decision to allow the proposals would be quashed.

Now the judge has approved a formal order by Hazel Blears, the secretary of state for communities and local government, who had conceded the planning permission should not be allowed to stand.

Ms Blears said the permission was made subject to certain conditions, two of which contained drafting errors which could lead to them being unenforceable.

Mr Justice Ouseley has ordered the secretary of state reconsider Npower’s plans.

Neil Yates, spokesman for Battle, said: “We are obviously very pleased that the planning permission has been quashed.

“We knew it was going to happen but now it has been rubber stamped things can move on.

“It will now be a case of waiting for the secretary of state to decide what, if anything, happens next in relation to the planning application.”

Cath Stevenson, regional development manager for Npower Renewables, said: “”Following a public inquiry into Npower Renewables’ Bradwell Wind Farm, planning permission was granted by the Government’s Planning Inspector.

“However, planning permission has been quashed because of drafting errors in two of the planning conditions.

“This technicality means the planning application for the wind farm will now go back the Government Planning Inspectorate and we are waiting for confirmation of timescales.”

A spokeswoman for the Department of Communities and Local Government declined to comment.
